Larry at Art in the Park, June, 2007
Larry Katz lives
in Ottawa and turns a variety of domestic woods, using predominantly
already downed trees
from eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Larry has loved spending time in
the forest since childhood.
Turning allows him to express his reverence for nature by artistically
integrating form, function and wood grain
reflecting the natural history of trees. He has said, “ I turn because I
love it, and it is honest labour.”
Larry produces mainly bowls and platters that feel good, are pleasing to
the eye, and serve to illustrate
the history and grain patterns of trees. As well, he produces other turned
forms to express himself and
demonstrate the beauty and potential use of wood.
Following his retirement as national research director of the Canadian
Union of Public Employees, Larry has
been turning full-time. He is an active member of the Ottawa Valley
Woodturners’ Club, where he has demonstrated
and taught, and enjoys passing on to new turners what he has learned to
give back to a club that has given so much
to him. Larry has won a number of ribbons at the Ottawa Wood Show annual
competitions and regularly shows his
work at craft and artisan fairs and galleries. If you would like to
