Alan Lacer has been involved in the turning field for over 34 years as a turner, teacher, writer, exhibition coordinator, demonstrator and past president of the American Association of Woodturners. His work has appeared in a number of regional and national exhibitions. Alan has been a regular instructor and demonstrator of the craft--having worked in all 50 states as well as 4 foreign countries.
He has published over 110 articles, columns and tips, covering technical aspects of woodturning, many specific projects, stories related to both contemporary and historical woodturning and the turning traditions of Japan and Germany. He has also produced five videos on his own, with three of them winning a total of five national awards. In 1999 the American Association of Woodturners awarded him their Lifetime Honorary Member Award for his contributions to the field.

The Great Canadian Beaver Cup Pond Hockey Classic is just one of many events that will take place during Winterlude. Norm Younger and Lionel Bédard pose with the new 2010 Beaver Cup. Lionel turned the bowl, Norm made the base.
We ended up having very little notice and things went south from there. Just about anything bad that could happen did! The original topping, a beautiful vase of prized Birdseye Maple split down the middle the day the trophy was to be delivered, some of the joints on the base need a touch-up because Norm did not really have the time required to do his usual bang-up job. And on, and on. Lucky for us, the Beaver Cup people have agreed to give us the trophy back at the end of Winterlude so we can do a bit of touch-up before the trophy retires to Malone's at Dows Lake until next year.
The trophy will be featured on the A-Channel Morning show that opens Winterlude, Friday the 5th at 9:20 am. Considering it is now Thursday night 11:00 pm, that's kind of short notice! I've done some nosing around and found that most of the A-Channel's shows are also broadcast on U-Tube. The internet address is www.youtube.com/user/AMorningVideo. Check it out!
Members of the Valley Woodturners
I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the April 13 meeting. Thanks to Sam for reading this message and to Mike for putting information on the website. Thank you very much for so generously contributing works of art to “For the Kids” Charity Auction in past years. This year the event will be held on Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Hampton Inn Ottawa. The proceeds will benefit three great local organizations and the children they serve.
The Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre provides specialized physical rehabilitation, developmental and behavioural support for 3000 children and youth in Eastern Ontario. The Ottawa Rotary Home offers short-term respite care to families of children with physical disabilities. Autism Ontario – Ottawa improves the quality of life for children and families living with autism spectrum disorders.
All pieces submitted by Woodturners will be displayed for sale in the “Art Auction” section. These have become very popular among the 700 guests attending this event annually and continue to generate a lot of competitive bidding.
Please give any pieces that you have brought with you this evening to Sam. I will pick these up from him soon. If you have pieces to donate before May 5 I will be glad to pick them up at your convenience. You can contact me at 613 821 4232 or at iris1@rogers.com
You are also welcome to attend at a cost of $1,000.00 for a Bronze level table of 10 guests or for $100.00 per person which includes dinner, wine, bidding card and entertainment which is Barbershop Music provided be members of the Capital City Chorus. A Bronze sponsorship will get recognition for the Valley Turners in the program and a sign at the table. There are other levels available.
You can visit the auction website through the link on our website.
The "Brockville Lions Club" in conjunction with the "Carving Show and Sale" is having their 3rd Annual Woodworking Show and Tool Sale, in Brockville, at the Brockville Memorial Center.
This is a 2 day event and is scheduled for Friday May 14th, 2010 from 1pm to 8pm, and Saturday May 15th, 2010 from 9am to 4pm. All forms of woodwork will be on display. They are now accepting registration for participants. Participants need to be demonstrating their art form during the show. It's time to dust off your midi lathe and tools if you have them.
Member John Jackson tells me that proceeds will be used by the Lions Club to help pay for medic alert bracelets for children that are in need. Brian Schofield adds that he participated in the show last year and will again this year. He adds that it is more an "Art/Artisan" show but he had lots of fun and that the cause is worth supporting.
Mike
I have briefly mentioned this to Lionel but I thought this might be of interest to other members as well. I have been demonstrating at the Lions Wood Show for the past 2 years and very much enjoyed it. It is a very informal show. I bring both my 1224 and 2436 lathes to the show. If anyone is interested in spending an hour or so, they are welcome to use my equipment. There will be plenty of wood available. If anyone is interested, they could email me directly at lbesharah@sympatico.ca
ThanksAndre Martel is setting up a 2-day course in End Grain Hollowing in English. Exact dates to be determined but around the end of July, begining of August, weekend of week days.

Greetings from Turn-On! Chicago 2010
Dear Fellow Woodturner,
You deserve a vacation! A little get-away. Some time to relax, recharge and learn some new turning techniques. Our symposium, Turn-On! Chicago 2010 happens on August 20-22 and you deserve to be there. We have a stellar roster of demonstrators, hands-on events, a great trade show and more, all designed for you.
We are located in the near north suburbs of Chicago at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, a secluded campus near to Chicago, but away from the noise and traffic of the City of Broad Shoulders, the City That Turns. This year, we are featuring a dozen world-class demonstrators, covering every aspect of turning.
This is an opportunity to show your support for our Armed Forces, as well. At the symposium, you can donate your turned pens for distribution to the troops that put themselves in harm’s way for us. We will be collecting your pens for the troops. In addition, there will be a hands-on turning session on Friday evening. This is a great chance to turn a pen for the troops, and if you are new to pen turning, we’ll have a staff of seasoned pen turners to guide you through the process. Bring your turned pens to Chicago or turn one while you’re here. We’ll make sure they get delivered to those who deserve them the most.
Housing is still available at the symposium. An additional block of rooms has been made available to symposium attendees, but these are going fast. Register now to reserve a room on campus. Call Jan Shotola at 847-412-9781 for housing questions.
Registration is still $260 for all three days, but late registration fees go into effect soon. Save yourself some money and register today! Registration forms are available on the website: www.turnonchicago.com or contact Jan Shotola at jshotola@yahoo.com or call at 847-412-9781. We’re saving a spot for you, but don’t delay!
See you in August,
Paul Shotola, Turn-On! Chicago 2010

Thank goodness for wood in all its glory! We've chosen Thanksgiving Weekend to celebrate wood, its properties, uses and beauty. Special tool displays, muley saw, pit sawing and timber-framing demonstrations, special farm and cabinet-making projects, traditional lumbering music and a variety of guest wood workers (e.g. chair-makers, canoe-builders, turners and luthiers) will all be part of this hands-on celebration.
Pick up some harvest treats or enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at Willard's Hotel in the heart of the Village.
